Allen graduated from Merton College, Oxford, in 1871. Allen spent a number of years as a teacher before becoming interested in Darwin, Spencer and others of that generation. He became an ardent socialist and turned to writing non-fiction to make a living, although unsuccessfully. It was when he turned reluctantly to fiction that he began to make his mark. His works included Nature Studies (1883), a biography of Darwin (1885), The Woman Who Did (1895) and The British Barbarians (1895). |
