Dumas began writing plays after failed attempts at being a lawyer. Some of his early plays were very popular at the time, including Napoleon Bonaparte (1831) and Antony (1831). Dumas continued to write plays, however he began to publish historical novels, usually with a backdrop of the 16th and 17th centuries, which became very popular in his time. His best-known works include The Three Musketeers (1844), Twenty Years After (1845), The Count of Monte Cristo (1845), The Man in the Iron Mask (1847), Ten Years Later, or the Vicomte de Bragelonne (1847) and The Black Tulip (1850). |
