Euripides is said to have been born at Salamis on the day the Greeks defeated the Persians there. He was the youngest of Athens' three great dramatists (Aeschylus and Sophocles) and is said to have written some ninety plays, of which 18 have survived. His plays display a degree of human quality and realism. Aristophanes made much fun of Euripides in his own plays. He went to Macedonia in 408 BC at the invitation of King Archelaus and died there two years later.
