Educated primarily at home by tutors, Deledda had already published her first story as a child. Her first novel, Flower of Sardinia appeared in 1892 and achieved some success. In 1900, she married Palmiro Madesani and the couple moved to Rome. Her first critical success came in 1903, when she published Elias Portolu. Numerous novels and plays followed and she became one of Italy's most popular novelists of the time. Many of Deledda's novels portray life in her native Sardinia. In 1926, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her many works include Cenere [Ashes] (1904), After Divorce (1905), Il Nonno (1909), Canne Al Vento (1913), La Madre [The Mother] (1920), Annalena Bilsini (1927), Sol d'Estate (1933) and Cosima (1937 Posthumous). |
