Educated at Harvard Law School, Fiske initially practiced law until turning to writing. Travelling to Europe in 1873, he met many notables including Darwin, Huxley and Spencer which influenced his thinking and led to his publication of Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy in 1874. This was very successful and established Fiske as a writer of merit in philosophical circles. Turning to history and historical thought, Fiske published probably his best work, The Critical Period of American History, 1783-1789 in 1880. |
