Educated in theology at Griefswald University, Meinhold was forced to abandon his studies due to financial constraints. He worked as a tutor for a couple of years before returning to his studies and in 1820 passed his examination and became a rector in Usedom. He began writing in the early 1820's, but it was his literary hoax, Mary Schweidler: The Amber Witch, in 1843 which brought him to prominence. Claiming that the story was based on the historical documents of one pastor Abraham Schweidler of Coserow, Meinhold had everyone, including academics, believing that it was factual. He later explained the deception. His other works include The Pastor's Daughter Coserow (1826), Apology of Christianity (1835), Poems (1835) and Sidonia von Bork, The Sorceress (1847). |
