Educated at Princeton University, Fitzgerald left in 1917 to enlist in the army and did not graduate. In 1920, Fitzgerald published his first novel, This Side of Paradise, which was an immediate success and in that year married Zelda Sayre. He followed up in 1920 with Flappers and Philosophers, a collection of short stories which was also well received. His other works during this period included Tales of the Jazz Age (1922) and The Beautiful and the Damned (1922). He and Zelda travelled to France in 1924 and in 1925 he published his finest work, The Great Gatsby. In 1926, he published All the Sad Young Men which contains some of his best short stories. His wife had a nervous breakdown in the early 1930's which placed her in a sanatarium for the remainder of her life. It wasn't until 1934 that Fitzgerald published his next novel, Tender is the Night, and the following year his last collection of short stories, Taps at Reveille appeared. Fitzgerald worked as a scriptwriter in Hollywood from 1937. |
