Flaubert's education in law was cut short due to ill health and he began a writing career. He travelled abroad during 1849 to 1851, visiting Italy and the Near East. The work that he is best known by was Madame Bovary (1857), which was considered immoral at the time and led to his trial. Other works included Salammbo (1862), Herodias (1872), Sentimental Education (1870), and Bouvard and Pecuchet (1881).
