Educated at Tonbridge School and King's Colle, Cambridge, Forster began writing immediately after he graduated. His first major novel, Where Angels Fear to Tread, was published in 1905, and is influenced by his time in Italy. This was followed by The Longest Journey (1907), A Room With a View (1908) and Howard's End (1910), considered to be his best novel. Forster visited India on a couple of occasions and spent some time in Alexandria during the war. His experience's in India are described in the Hill of Devi (1953). Another novel of note, and one that is considered by some critics to be better than Howard's End is A Passage to India (1924). Forster also wrote numerous short stories and collaborated with Crozier on the libretto for Benjamin Britten's opera, Billy Budd (1951). |
