Coming from a prosperous family, Glasgow, lived the life of a southern belle in Virginia, the setting for many of her subsequent 19 novels. She published her first work in 1897, but it wasn't until she published the first of her novels on the social history of Virginia, The Voice of the People, in 1900 that her writing matured. Her most critically acclaimed work was Barren Ground (1925) and she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1941 for her novel, In This Our Life. Her other notable works include The Romantic Comedians (1926), They Stooped to Folly (1929), The Sheltered Life (1932) and Vein of Iron (1935). |
