Educated at the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale, Gregory went to Paris in 1876 to study art. In 1880, he exhibited his first works and during the remainder of the 1880's made a living painting portraits of prominent people. From 1890, he spent more of his time writing. An excellent essayist, he contributed to the New York Post as "An Idler". These essays were collectively published in Worldly Ways and Byways in 1898. The Ways of Men followed in 1900.
