Howells began his career as a typesetter and reporter in Ohio and contributed poetry to the Atlantic Monthly. His biography of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 was rewarded on Lincoln's election with a consulship at Venice, Italy (1861-1865). His Venetian Life (1866) and Italian Journeys (1867) are reflections on his time spent there. He became assistant editor of the Atlantic Monthly from 1866 to 1871 and, thereafter, editor from 1871 to 1881. From 1886 to 1891 he was associate editor of Harper's Magazine and was also a contributor on literary subjects. His greatest work is The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885), and other important works include Their Wedding Journey (1872), A Chance Acquaintance (1873), A Foregone Conclusion (1875), The Undiscovered Country (1880), Indian Summer (1885) and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890). Howells published numerous poems, essays and contributory articles and was an adviser to Mark Twain and Henry James, being one of the first to recognize their great talent. |
