The son of a New York merchant, Irving studied law in his early years. However, his skills in
essay writing led him to a career in literature. In 1809, he published the History of New York From the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty under the pseudonym Knickerbocker and followed this with The Sketch Book in 1820 which was highly acclaimed both in America and abroad. From 1826 to 1832 he was attached to the American legations in Madrid and London, but nevertheless continued his writings with biographies of Columbus (1828) and the Companions of Columbus (1831). In 1835 he published A Tour on the Prairies describing his factual journey across Oklahoma. With the assistance of records provided by John Jacob Astor, Irving wrote Astoria in 1836 and Captain Bonneville in 1837, which provide a detailed insight into the fur trade of the West. Irving is considered one of the finest American writers to this day. |
