Educated at home, Johnston's early life was relatively uneventful. She began writing stories in her youth, eventually publishing her first book, Prisoners of Hope, in 1898. She followed two years later with To Have and To Hold, which became a phenomenal best-seller. Her third novel, Audrey, published in 1902 was also successful, but thereafter her popularity declined. Her other works included Sir Mortimer (1904), The Goddess of Reason (1907), Lewis Rand (1908), The Long Roll (1911), The Witch (1914), Silver Cross (1921), 1492 (1922), The Great Valley (1926) and The Exile (1927). |
