One of the great intellectuals of Christian antiquity. Augustine's City of God is a masterpiece of theology and expouses a philosophy of religion based on predestination. After spending his youth in Carthage, Augustine travelled to Rome where he was influenced by bishop Ambrose who baptized him in 387 AD. Returning to Africa, he was ordained as a priest in 391 AD and became the bishop of Hippo in 396 AD.
