Educated at King's College, London and Magdalene College, Cambridge, Kingsley was ordained as curate of Eversley in 1842 and two years later became the parish priest, a post he held for the remainder of his life. His first novel, Yeast, was published in Fraser's Magazine in 1848 and was followed by Alton Locke in 1850. His principal novels followed and included Hypatia (1853), Westward Ho! (1855) which is an anti-Catholic adventure story set in Elizabethan times, Two Years Ago (1857), The Water Babies (1863) a immensely popular children's book, and Hereward the Wake (1865). Kingsley also published numerous essays, lectures, reviews and several volumes of sermons. He also served as chaplain to Queen Victoria (1859). |
