Andrew Lang
Author Code: EALX
| |
|
Born: Mar. 31, 1844 - Selkirk, Scotland Died: Jul. 20, 1912 - Banchory, Kincardine, Scotland
|
Lang was educated at St. Andrews University and Balliol College, Oxford and was a fellow of Merton College until 1875. Moving to London at that time, he began his writing career with critical articles in London newspapers and published his first book of verse, Ballads and Lyrics of Old France, in 1872. Lang had a strong interest in anthropology which led to his first book on folklore, Custom and Myth, in 1884. Myth, Ritual and Religion followed in 1887 and The Making of Religion in 1898. As a Greek scholar, Lang collaborated with S. H. Butcher, W. Leaf and E. Myers, in producing excellent prose versions of Homer's Odyssey and Iliad. Lang wrote many novels, the best of which were The Mark of Cain (1886) and The Disentanglers (1902). He received much praise for his 12-volume collection of fairy tales, each named after a different colour, which were published between 1889 and 1910. Lang also wrote some of his own fairy tales in The Gold of Fairnilee (1888) and other works, which became children's classics. Lang published numerous historical monographs, biographies, translations and other works, the last of which was a History of English Literature in 1912. |
