Brother of Jacob Abbott. He was for some years a Congregational minister and preached at Worcester and Roxbury, Massachusetts, but after 1844 devoted himself to literature and educational work. His partisan spirit seriously impairs the value of his very readable works. Among his works are The Empire of Austria (1859), Italy (1860), History of Napoleon III. (1869), History of Louis XIV (1871), History of the Civil War in America (1870), Lives of the Presidents (1882-posthumous) and History of Maine from its Discovery by Northmen (1875). |
