Leonard left his home in Pennsylvania in 1830 and spent a year in St. Louis before joining a fur trapping company and embarking on a journey that would cover a great deal of the western USA. He was to spend over 5 years exploring, trading and trapping and his journal, The Adventures of a Mountain Man, gives vivid details of his journey.
