Lermontov was educated at Moscow University and the Cadet School at St. Petersburg, graduating in 1834.He was exiled in 1837 to the Caucasus after writing a controversial elegy on the death of Pushkin and again in 1840, after taking part in a duel. His famous novel, A Hero of Our Time (1840) was to have a profound influence on subsequent Russian writers. Lermontov was killed in a duel in 1841. In his short life, Lermontov published numerous poems and dramas, including Maskarad (1842 posthumous).
