Leroux received his degree in law in 1889, but was always more interested in writing. He held various writing posts including journalist, court reporter, literary critic and correspondent. His first successful novel was The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1907) and was followed by his best-known work, The Phantom of the Opera (1910). Leroux also wrote a number of plays and stage dramas, and even experimented with screenplays for the then silent screen.
