After spending time as a Congregational minister, lecturer and free-lance preacher, MacDonald published Within and Without, a poetic tragedy, in 1855, which opened the door on his literary career. He is best remembered for his fairy stories, although he wrote many novels, among which are Robert Falconer (1865), Alec Forbes of Howglen (1865), and David Elginbrod (1863). His best-known book for children is undoubtedly At The Back of the North Wind (1871), however, The Princess and the Goblin (1872) and The Princess and Curdie (1873) are probably his best works. |
