Malthus was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge and became curate of Albury in Surrey in 1798. He published anonymously An Essay on the Principle of Population as it Affects the Future Improvement of Society, etc in 1798. In this he argued for checks and controls on population growth which in his view would increase at such a rate that society would not be able to maintain itself. The work was extremely controversial. Other works include An Inquiry into the Nature and Progress of Rent and Principles of Political Economy Considered with a View to Their Practical Application. Malthus became professor political economy and history at East India Company College, Haileybury in 1805 and remained there for the rest of his life.
