Marryat entered service with the Royal Navy at the age of 14 and served until he retired in 1830 with the rank of Captain. Embarking on his literary career after that, Marryat draws much upon his naval experiences in many of his novels of sea-life including Frank Mildmay (1829), Peter Simple (1834), Jacob Faithful (1834) Mr. Midshipman Easy (1836), The Phantom Ship (1839) and Masterman Ready (1841). Marryat also wroyte a number of children's books including The Children of the New Forest (1847) and other novels that dealt with other issues than the sea such as Snarleyyow (1837) and The Settlers in Canada (1844).
