Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, Bacon was admitted to Gray's Inn and became a barrister in 1582. He was elected to Parliament in 1584 and progressed to Solicitor-General in 1607, Attorney-General in 1613, Lord Keeper in 1617, and ultimately the Lord Chancellor in 1618. He was charged with bribery in 1621 and was stripped of his post, even spending a few days in the Tower of London. Much of his literary and philosophical work was accomplished after this date, however, one of his finest philosophical works. Advancement of Learning, was published in 1605. Bacon's literary works include New Atlantis (1626), the Essays (1625), and the History of Henry the Seventh in 1622. |
