Orczy was the only child of the composer and conductor Baron Felix Orczy. Educated in Brussels, Paris and London, she was initially interested in becoming an artist and exhibited some of her work at the Royal Academy. She attained success and critical acclaim with the publication of her novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1905. She wrote two less successful sequels, The Elusive Pimpernel (1908) and The Way of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1933). Orczy also wrote several detective and mystery stories.
