Page was educated Washington College and the University of Virginia where he graduated in law in 1874. He practiced law until 1893, in which year he moved to Washington D.C.where he embarked on a literary career. His first publications were short stories which were collected and published as Ole Virginia, Marse Chan, and Other Stories (1887). From 1913 to 1919 Page was ambassador to Italy. Page published some works of a social history nature and a number of collections of short stories, among which were The Burial of the Guns; and Other Stories (1894), The Old Gentleman of the Black Stock (1897) and Red Rock (1898). Page also produced a biography of Robert E. Lee in 1911. Page's work greatly romanticized the southern plantation and southern life. |
