Porter attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and developed her talent for singing. For many years afterwards, Porter sang in choirs, concerts, etc. Porter published her first story in 1900 and turned to full-time writing in 1901. Her first novel, Cross Currents, was published in 1907 and followed with the sequel, The Turn of the Tide in 1908. In 1911, she had her first best-seller in Miss Billy. The work for which she is best known, Pollyanna, first appeared in serial form in the Christian Herald in 1912 and was published as a novel in 1913. It was an enormous success and its sequel Pollyanna Grows Up (1914) was also a best-seller. Other works of note are Just David (1916) and Marie, Marie (1920). |
