Educated in Rugby, Ransome took a job in a publishing house and was a war correspondent in the First World War. During this period, he travelled to Russia before and after the October revolution. Some of his early work such as The Crisis in Russia (1920) deals with this era. Ransome also travelled in China, Egypt and the Sudan. Some of his early work included Old Peter's Russian Tales (1916) and Racundra's First Cruise (1923). His many works also include Swallows and Amazons (1931), We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea (1937) and Mainly About Fishing (1959).
