Ridpath graduated from Indiana Ashbury University in 1863. He worked as a teacher and principal of Thorntown Academy until 1866, when he returned to his alma mater as professor of English, later becoming vice-president of the University. He retired in 1885 in order to concentrate on writing. He had published History of the United States, Prepared Especially for Schools in 1875. His other best-known works include A Popular History of the Unites States of America (1876), Cyclopedia of Universal History (1880-85) and Great Races of Mankind (1884-94).
