Honore de Balzac

Author Code: FHDB

Born: May 20, 1799 - Tours, France

Died: Aug. 18, 1850 - Paris, France

Considered by many to be the greatest of all novelists, Balzac's La Comedie Humaine (The Human Comedy) is a representation of the entire complex system of French society from Parisian to the provincial. He spent most of his early life in Paris working as a lawyer's clerk, newspaper writer and various business positions before beginning his writing career. His first success, Les Chouans, came in 1829. Over the next 20 years he produced over 40 novels which, by 1834, he decided to categorize and group so that they would form one complete work. Thus the Human Comedy was born in 1840. It remains one of the world's greatest masterpieces to this day.
