Sawyer attended Flatbush Academy on Long Island from 1793 to 1796. He also studied at the universities of Pennsylvania and North Carolina. He was admitted to the bar in 1804. He subsequently served eight terms of office in Congress as member from North Carolina. In addition to his own Autobiography (1844), Sawyer published a number of plays and biographies including John Randolph of Roanoke (1844).
