Educated primarily by her mother, Schreiner came to England in 1881 with the aim of studying medicine. With the publication of her first and most important work, The Story of an African Farm (1883), she established herself as an eminent writer and the work was an immediate success both in Europe and the United States. Her other notable works include an attack on Cecil Rhodes in Trooper Peter Halkett of Mashonaland (1897) and Women and Labour (1911), which became a bible of the Woman's Movement. Her last published work was the uncompleted From Man to Man (1926 posthumous).
