Sienkiewicz was educated at Warsaw University, but left before obtaining a degree. He published articles starting in 1869 and his first novel, In Vain, in 1872. He travelled to the US, Italy and France as a correspondent and on his return to Poland, published a number of short stories which were very successful. His greatest work is his historical trilogy, With Fire and Sword (1884), The Deluge (1886) and Pan Michael (1888), but he is probably best-remembered by most people for his historical novel Quo Vadis? (1896). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1905. |
