Algernon Charles Swinburne

Author Code: EACS

Born: Apr. 5, 1837 - London, England

Died: Apr. 10, 1909 - Putney, London, England

Swinburne attended Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, but did not graduate. He began writing poetry and dramas almost immediately and his first publication The Queen Mother. Rosamond. Two Plays (1861) was not noteworthy. His first success came with Atalanta in Calydon (1865) a drama along the lines of Greek tragedy, brought him recognition and celebrity. Also in 1865, Swinburne published the first part of his trilogy on Mary, Queen of Scots, Chastelard. The remainder of the trilogy came with Bothwell, A Tragedy (1874) and Mary Stuart in 1881. Swinburne also wrote a great deal of literary criticism and some wonderful poetry in over 20 volumes.
