Baum began his writing career as a journalist in South Dakota and subsequently after moving to Chicago. His first book, Father Goose, was published in 1899 and achieved commercial success. This was followed in 1900 with the even more successful Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Produced on the stage for the first time in 1901, the "Wizard" became one of the cinema's all-time classics with its filmatisation in 1939. Baum wrote over 60 books, 14 of which deal with the land of Oz. |
