Thorpe studied painting in New York and had his first exhibition in 1833. He moved to Louisiana in 1836 where he became a newspaper publisher. He published his humorous The Big Bear of Arkansas in 1841 which was well-received. In 1854, he returned to New York and published his finest work, The Hive of the Bee Hunter. He fought in the Civil War and afterwards wrote for various journals including Harper's. |
