Tocqueville spent time in America between 1831 and 1832 and on his return to France, published the first part of Democracy in America in 1835. This was very well-received in France and led to his attaining a seat in the French Academy in 1841. The second portion of the work was published in 1840. After the 1848 Revolution in France, Tocqueville was elected to the Constituent Assembly and served as minister of foreign affairs in 1849. After the return of Louis Napoleon in 1851 his fortunes suffered. He also published The Old Regime and the Revolution in 1856.
