Educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, Walpole travelled in Italy and France before entering Parliament as MP for Callington in 1741. He continued as an MP for various constituencies until 1767. He settled in Twickenham in 1747 in a pseduo-gothic manor which was known as Strawberry Hill. He began to publish from his own press in 1758 with Catalogue of Royal and Noble Authors, His best-known work, Castle of Otranto, was published in 1764 and was a popular success, said to usher in the Gothic romances. Other works included Mysterious Mother (1768) and Anecdotes of Painting in England (1762-1771). Walpole is probably best known for his letter writing which consisted of over 3000 letters written between 1732 and 1797 and which were published after his death. |
