Early on she was influenced by the vicar, John Keble, and her writing took on a religious tone and helped to spread the influence of the Oxford Movement in religion. Her first novel, The Heir of Redclyffe (1853), was a popular success and was followed by Heartsease (1854), The Little Duke (1854), The Lances of Lynwood (1855), The Daisy Chain (1856), Dynevor Terrace (1857), The Prince and the Page (1865), The Dove in the Eagle's Nest (1866) and The Caged Lion (1869).
