Berkeley graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1704 and came to England in 1713. He travelled abroad, including three years in America from 1728. He was bishop of Cloyne in Ireland from 1734 until 1752 when he returned to Oxford in retirement. His radical theory of perception "to be is to be perceived" was expanded in probably his most famous work, Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision published in 1709. His other works included A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710), Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous (1713), Alciphron (1732) and the Querist (1735-37) which dealt with social reform.
