Addison was a graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford (1693) and after a period as a tutor and poetic writing came to London where he began a career in civil service. During this period he published The Campaign, a poem extolling the British victory over the French at Blenheim. Addison held numerous posts including undersecretary of state for southern affairs and was a member of Parliament.
Addison contributed to Richard Steele's periodical, The Tatler, and formed a lasting relationship with Steele that led, in 1711, to the formation of The Spectator. |
