Author Code: CXEN

Born: 431 BC - Attica, Greece

Died: 354 BC - Attica, Greece

Xenophon became a disciple of Socrates in his youth. In the war between Cyrus and Artaxerxes in 401, Xenophon joined the Greek contingent and was promoted to a general after the battle of Cunaxa. He led a famous retreat of his force to the Black Sea and wrote Anabasis which is a history of his exploits during this time. He also wrote the Hellenica, which continues the history of Thucydides up to 362 BC. His other writings included a number of essays on a variety of subjects, the Memorabilia which are recollections of Socrates, and Symposium, also based on the thoughts and ideas of Socrates.
