Russell was orphaned as a child and was raised by his grandfather, John Russell, 1st Earl Russell. Educated at Cambridge University where he studied mathematics and philosophy, Russell published numerous works in these fields including his collaborative work with Alfred North Whitehead, Principia Mathematica (1910-1913) and his History of Western Philosophy (1945). A staunch pacifist, Russell was imprisoned in 1918 and again in 1961, the latter for civil disobedience regarding nuclear disarmament. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for 1950. |
