Gluck studied violin and cello in Prague as a young man and continued his musical education in Vienna. In 1741, he produced his first opera, Artaserses, in Milan. In 1745, he travelled to England and produced two operas in London which were not very successful, due to the public's preference for Handel. He then returned to Germany and married into a wealthy family. He wrote numerous operas such as Artamene (1746), Semiramide Riconosciuta (1748), Orfeo et Eurydice (1762), Alceste (1767) and Paride et Elena (1770), before embarking on works for the Paris Opera. From 1772 to 1779 he produced Iphigenie en Aulide (1774), Orfeo - french version (1774) and Iphigenie en Tauride (1779) which were all well-received in France. |
