The daughter of a cotton farmer, Beatrix spent her holidays during childhood in Scotland and the English Lake District, where she developed her love of animals and her artistic talents. After sending a number of illustrated animal stories to a sick child, she decided to publish her stories which began in 1900 with The Tale of Peter Rabbit. In 1902 she followed with The Tailor of Gloucester. Numerous other stories followed over the next 13 years until she married and devoted her time to breeding sheep and extending her farm property. Her land was bequeathed to the English National Trust. Potter was an excellent illustrator and her stories and characters, including Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Squirrel Nutkin, Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit, have been translated into numerous languages. |
