Educated in Munich at the Luitpold Gymnasium, Einstein moved to Switzerland in 1895 and studied at the Polytechnic Academy in Zurich, where he earned a doctorate in physics in 1905 with his thesis On a new determination of molecular dimensions. That same year he published four major research papers that would revolutionize the field of physics. These dealt with the special theory of relativity, the equivalence of mass and energy, the theory of Brownian motion and the photon theory of light. From 1902 to 1909 Einstein worked in the Bern patent office. In 1908 he lectured at the University of Bern and became a professor of physics at the University of Zurich the following year. In 1911, he moved to Prague where he held a professorship at the Karl-Ferdinand University. Returning to Zurich in 1912, he spent two years tenure at the Eidenossische Technische Hochschule before returning to Germany in 1914. During the next 7 years, Einstein held a research position at the Prussian Academy of Sciences and a chair at the University of Berlin. In 1919, his general theory of relativity was verified and in 1921 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on photoelectric law and theoretical physics. During the 1920's, Einstein travelled to the USA, South America, Japan, France and Palestine. In 1932, he accepted a post at Princeton and because of the Nazi takeover the following year, never returned to Germany. He received US citizenship in 1940. Einstein's principle publications include Special Theory of Relativity (1905), General Theory of Relativity (1916), Investigations on Theory of Brownian Movement (1926), About Zionism (1930), Why War? (1933), My Philosophy (1934), The Evolution of Physics (1938) and Out of My Later Years (1950). Today, he is recognized as one of the greatest creative intellects in history. |
