Telemann had been discouraged from taking up a musical career by his parents and studied law, science and languages at Leipzig University. Nevertheless, his natural talent for music led him to begin composing while still at University. He took the position of director of the Leipzig Opera, for which he also composed. He subsequently held various posts as musical director in Frankfurt and Hamburg. His output was considerable, numbering forty-four Passions, forty operas and a huge quantity of chamber music. Telemann was a close friend of both Bach and Handel who greatly admired his work.
