Lazarus came from a cultured Jewish family of Spanish descent. At an early age she studied the classics and languages, and began her literary career with a number of translations. She contributed much of her early poetry to Lippincott's Magazine. In 1871, she published Admetus and Other Poems and followed in 1874 with Alide which received much critical acclaim. Lazarus is best remembered for her poem, The New Colossus (1883), part of which was inscribed on a plaque on the Statue of Liberty when it was dedicated in 1886. Her other well-known works include The Spagnoletto (1881), The Dance to Death (1882), Songs of a Semite (1882) and By The Waters of Babylon (1887). |
