An idealistic liberalfrom an early age, Godwin's principal work, An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, and Its Influence on General Virtue and Happiness (1793), proposed a doctrine of extreme individualism and cultural determinism. In 1797, Godwin married Mary Wollstonecraft and their daughter Mary would go on to marry Percy Bysshe Shelley and become a famous author in her own right. Godwin's other principal works include Things As They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams (1794), The Enquirer (1797), Of Population (1820) and Thoughts On Man: His Nature, Productions and Discoveries (1831). |
